Juhlavuoden julkaisu: mPhone Really Limited Edition

Kuva tuotteen onnellisesta vastaanottajasta löytyy TiTen galleriasta.

NUCCC 2007

NUCCC on taas tulossa ja tällä kertaa Lundissa 4.5.2007-6.5.2007 Lundissa, Ruotsissa. Nyt olisi siis aika kysellä, että löytyykö Modeemin jäsenistöstä innostusta a) lähteä tuonne excuilemaan, b) organisoida excu? Hallitus (@modeemi.fi) ottaa vastaan ilmoittautumisia molempiin vaihtoehtoihin.

Alla alkuperäinen maili:

Hej, Hei, Moi

NUCCC will this year be held 4-6 of May in Lund by DF.
There will be an information page at http://www.df.lth.se/nuccc07/
Please make a preliminary signup by sending an e-mail to nuccc07 (a) df.lth.se
so we can estimate how many to arrange accommodation for.

best regards

Mats Gustavsson /kapsyl/, Vice president of DF

Those Internet Hugging Wireless Hippies, Wippies

So far we have had startups like Fonera and OpenSpark/Sparknet offering WLAN/WiFi communities with community access points for broadband customers. Recently and very quietly Saunalahti -- an ISP, which is part of Elisa now -- released a pre-beta of yet another wireless community, Wippies. The trick is here, this community is supported heavily by operator-grade services like decent email space, diskspace, VoIP, blogs, forums etc. partially eliminating the need to get these services from Google and other service providers. And did I already mention that this operator community is not limited only to one operator? The HomeBox (WLAN-ADSL Router) or WiFiBox (WLAN AP) can be used also in every operator's ADSL or Internet connection. Saunalahti is also promising development interfaces and access to the community AP platform making the community AP in author's opinion the most promising attempt to build functional and truly open community AP. I guess the author has to admit that there still are operators, which still innovate and do new services. Here's the link to the service: http://www.wippies.com/

Television tulevaisuus

Bob Cringelyn blogi on yksi niistä blogeista, joita kirjoittaja henkilökohtaisesti jaksaa seurata. Viimeisimmässä blogikirjoituksessa, DRM Catcher: By the time Steve Jobs calls for the end of Digital Rights Management, it is already dead, ei niinkään kiinnostavaa ollut tuo DRM:n hukkaaminen vaan seuraava toteamus TV:stä ja sen muuntamisesta Internettiin:

But why would we even WANT a cable TV experience, anyway?

The future lies in watching precisely the video you want to watch precisely when YOU (rather than some programming executive) want to watch it. This requires a client-server distribution system for more than just ads and it will come as bandwidth and server capacity increase. I've spent the last three weeks explaining exactly how that will happen. But first Google has to make itself indispensable to European cable companies, to get a toehold in their market. Only when they are totally dependent on Google ad services will the search giant reveal its true video ambitions in Europe.... and the world.

Peer To Peer Networking Course at TUT

Once again from Professor Harju's email announcement: TLT-2486 ADVANCED COURSE IN BROADBAND NETWORKS, 3 cr The topic of this seminar course in Spring 2007 is *Peer-to-Peer Networking*. The course is suitable for postgraduate studies. The course starts on Friday, February 6, 2007 at 12.15 in TB111. For more information, see http://www.cs.tut.fi/kurssit/TLT-2486/ P2P systems are dynamic networks of peers that create an overlay network on top of the Internet Protocol (IP) network. P2P networks can aggregate enormous storage and processing resources while minimising entry and scaling costs. There are a lot of ways how these overlay networks can be formed and managed, and how content is stored into and searched from these networks. The aim of the course is to give a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the different mechanisms and aspects involved.

Monday and The Destruction of Earth

Two things that have very much in common. Both are somewhat annoying but once both are over is the Universe generally a much nicer place to live in. Although stored already to several places in the Internet, I thought that also Modeemi members would take interest in the Top 10 Ways to Destruct the Earth as a source of inspiration or an addition to the boring project plan risk analysis sections. After all, you never know, when someone decides to clean the interstellar neighbourhood from those annoying, loud ape-descended beings who pollute a perfectly nice space with reality shows and other annoying things.
